Social media site knocks Google off the top spot

Facebook has overtaken Google to be crowned the most visited site in the U.S. according to a new study from internet research firm Experian Hitwise.

Between the months of January and November, Facebook accounted for 8.93 per cent of all website clicks compared with Google who ranked second with 7.19 per cent of clicks. Yahoo, Yahoo Mail and YouTube made up the rest of the top five most visited sites. Facebook was the most searched term on Google in 2010.

This research highlights the growing influence social media has on consumers and businesses. Contact with new and existing customers can be achieved through Facebook and other forms of social media.

According to the financial post, the top 10 fastest growing brands on Facebook saw their number of ‘likes’ soar by an average of 20 per cent, when using Facbook and social media to market seasonal promotions.
