Over the past six months retailers have seen the popularity of their social media sites double, according to yahoo.com.
A survey carried out by market research specialists, eDigitalResearch, showed that Facebook was the most popular social media platform for retail brands to connect with their online consumers.
The research looked at the top 72 UK retail brands and found that fashion retailers have a significantly stronger presence across all social media websites than any other retail sector. Topshop had the most fans on Facebook and is now actively engaging with over 1 million customers through the social media site.
Topshop also had the most followers on Twitter, followed by ‘etailer’ ASOS and Amazon.
Research Director at eDigitalResearch, Derek Eccleston, said:” Given the increase in online and mobile activity over recent months, it’s no surprise that the popularity of social media sites has increased. Our research clearly shows that consumers are increasingly using the platforms to communicate issues and ideas to retailers, and with ASOS set to open Europe’s first Facebook store, it is vital that brands have a strong presence on these sites.
“What retailers need to ensure, however, is that they are making the most of these loyal and dedicated online users to gain feedback, insight and create brand advocates with an innovative and effective social media strategy, which is constantly monitored,” added Mr Eccleston.
