Popular online retailer Amazon.com is set to increase its social media efforts, according to an article published by Reuters, despite having previously appeared to shun the internet’s most recent trends.
John Yurcisin was hired earlier this year by the company as director of social media, in order to allow Amazon to take advantage of one of digital marketing’s prime channels.
Amazon is thought to be working on building a group to rival the current leader in social games, Zynga.
While Amazon has pioneered sales in the world of e-commerce, it has seen sites such as the aforementioned Zynga, and Facebook, move well clear in social media stakes.
The company posted adverts for social games jobs on LinkedIn and Dice.com earlier last month (August). One particular advert, posted for a potential senior social games engineer, stated that the role would involve ‘working on a cutting edge initiative within Amazon.’
Incredibly popular on Facebook, the ‘Like’ and other such features are thought to have been inspired by Amazon’s customer review section; displayed at the bottom of each page, it allows customers to voice opinions on the site’s various products.
Any possible move towards making Amazon a viable social media site could offer a significant outlet for companies looking to increase their social media marketing horizons.
