Social media sites Facebook and Twitter, are regularly used by consumers to share online content to family, friends and followers. A webpage can be shared in seconds by simply pasting a URL into a social media site and clicking post. Sharing widget AddThis, has over one billion users every month and has been installed on more than 7 million domains.
According to social media news blog mashable.com, 44 per cent of all online shared content occurred through Facebook in 2010. This figures shows a 33 per cent rise from 2009. However, this number does not include any sharing via the ‘Like’ button on Facebook, which would suggest that the total number of shares through the site is likely to be much higher.
Myspace and Friendster are two platforms which saw a decrease in the number of shares than the previous year. Content shared through Myspace dropped by 20 per cent and Friendster witnessed a fall of 31 per cent.
